Joe Colombo
Joe Colombo (1930–1971) stands as one of the most visionary and legendary figures in 20th-century Italian industrial design. Despite a career that spanned little more than a decade—untimely cut short by his premature death from a heart attack at age 41—he established himself as a pioneer of the Space Age aesthetic. This was achieved through his prophetic futuristic vision, his acute appreciation for pioneering materials such as plastics and fiberglass, and his radical concepts regarding modularity and integrated living environments. He was a designer who 'lived in the future.' While his contemporaries were still figuring out how to carve a wooden chair, he was already envisioning how humanity would live in the atomic age and the era of the computer. Using plastics and vibrant colors, he transformed cold mechanical rationality into passionate Pop Art.
